Day 1 – Mr. Murphy Lurking About

The day started out great. We had all our ducks in line…cats too. We both went to water exercise class. Donna stuffed some more stuff in while I was in class. I finished a few last minute items while Donna was in class. I disconnected the shoreline and hit the button to start the generator. Click, click, click, click…OH sugar! (Not the exact words I may have uttered.)

Hello! My name is Murphy and I’m here to “hep” you. No thanks Mr. Trouble Maker extraordinaire! Hmmm! GEEZ, everything worked fine last week. Sounds like a battery problem, but…. Battery problem? Or blown charger? Well let’s be brilliant and start with the easiest to fix. First battery, OK, all acid levels on the mark. Second battery, first set of cells cap is off, looks like a piece of foil jammed down one cell. Second set, another bad cell, same thing. Now, shall we start off on a near 3-week trip with a bad battery? What, do I look stupid or something? Yank her out and off to Restless Wheels where $80+ and we has a new battery. Now the generator starts fine. Must be those 40 years of RV experience showing through. We finished loading and hooking up the toad.

Anyway, about 12:45 PM we hit the road, waving goodbye to Mr. Murphy standing there, staring at us disconsolately, in our rear view mirror. Not too bad since we planned to leave at noon. We’ve arrived at Walnut Hills KOA in Staunton, VA without incident at about 3:30 PM and 145 miles down the road. It’s in the mid 90’s here. Did I hear someone say “POOL?”

Yup! The pool was magnificent! Simply put. The weather is hot and the water cool due to recent rain. By 5:15 PM we nearly had to pool to ourselves. Must be dinner time for everyone else. There was even some shade along one edge to get out of the sun. Last time we were here we were up on he hill in the shade of the trees. Since we are only here for one night this time we took a site down on the flat in a pull- through site. No trees nearby, but great electric. This is a lot of words for an uneventful half-day on the road.
